The Order of the Stick

oots0020.gif

I did indeed LOL, though I did not ROTFL, but I totally could have since I have my own office. Incidentally if you're a gamer (or like me a former gamer) then click the pic to start at the beginning of this lovely webcomic!

Roche Limit

Today I feel like I hit mine. Which made me finding this entry of Irregular Webcomic! a little funnier.

For those who don't know the Roche Limit

is the distance within which a celestial body held together only by its own gravity will disintegrate due to a second celestial body's tidal forces exceeding the first body's gravitational self-attraction. Inside the Roche limit, orbiting material will tend to disperse and form rings, while outside the limit, material will tend to coalesce. The term is named after Édouard Roche, the French astronomer who first calculated this theoretical limit in 1848.

And much like a celestial body that has been put under too much gravitational stress I feel like bursting into rings! But I won’t. Not today. Today I will remember 1 Peter 4:11.

If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

And for those who don't know, Irregular Webcomic! is a long running well webcomic done by a guy using miniatures and Legos. And he even manages to work in all sorts of little physics lessons. But don't just take my word for it, CLICK THE LINK!

The Death of the Arcade

Geek's geek Wil Wheaton has written up a post both on his blog,WWdN: In Exile: Geek in Review: Pac-Man Fever, and Suicide Girls (not gonna link that generally NSFW site) that has to do with the passing of an American icon, the video game arcade.

Emma - A Steampunk Graphic Novel

I'm all about the webcomics, but this is something a bit different (and therefore very welcome). Emma by David Brunell-Brutman is more, in David's own words, a series of online serialized storybooks (think webcomic, but trade graphic novel pages for illustrated story pages). It started the end of last year and updates on Mondays.

Steampunk (Time Machine meets Mona Lisa Overdrive) is a great genre and one that I've considered fiddling with a bit myself. I found David's comic from a banner ad on Studio Foglio's Buck Godot webcomic. I also quite enjoy Girl Genius, also by the Foglios and an excellent example of steampunk itself.

Hope you enjoy!

Spoilers

Seeing a shirt on Threadless (posted to my tumblelog) that "spoils" a few classics and one or two recent movies got me to thinking. What should the shelf life on spoilers be?

I don't get out to the movies much and as a result have missed a fair number of "classics". For me to moan or complain because someone spoiled the surprise ending of say The Others for me a good six months after it had come out, would be silly. I realize that some amount of the viewing experience could be adversely affected if certain details are revealed and we should respect that to a reasonable degree, but that's too much to ask. For a movie I would argue that if you know something that you consider spoilerish, you should protect it for about the first month as best you can.

The nice thing about the internet is that you can generally provide a layer of protection from spoilers with good use of hyperlinks and colored text, but what about real life? If you're talking about a movie and one of the people in the conversation hasn't seen it yet and requests that the talk remain spoiler free, you should certainly honor that. That’s especially true if the person is a spouse or significant other. If it's a geeky friend then you have every right to give them crap about it or possibly give them three bucks to rent it, depending on the level of charity you're feeling.

So what if it’s a movie that has just come out on DVD? Given the one month rule, should spoilers still be announced? By then, most people who'll really care about the movie in question will probably have seen it and if they haven't then they're on their own.
If the movie has been out on DVD for more than a year and someone grouses then you should be able to blow them off. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

What do you think?

What Would Happen if You Bought 25 Bottles of Nyquil? This woman gets a wild hair and decides to find out. Very funny stuff (and some naughty words).

Dumb Intel

intel.jpg

Now I know what this poster from Intel is trying to say. "Make your computer as fast as a bald black man." And that's problematic in and of itself. But to have these men seemingly bowing to El Khakidor makes this an image that's even a little squirmier than that. What do you think?

Star Trek The Tour

Okay this is a little bit of Uber-Geekery. Star Trek The Tour, coming to a city near you? It's only coming as close as Charlotte/Raleigh for me. What is it? It's "a 50,000 square foot interactive tribute to the Star Trek 40-year-plus cultural phenomenon will be on tour". About thirty bucks a pop gets you opportunities like:

THE MUSEUM SPACE Here all Star Trek's worlds "collide" under one magnificent soaring roof. Each corner turned reveals still another of hundreds of Star Trek icons, these are the smaller sets, ornate costumes and familiar props in the STAR TREK THE TOUR Collection. It is a truly priceless collection and is curated as professionally and completely as that of any great museum. The collection before you is considered the most complete and authentic collection of Star Trek items in existence — and that's anywhere in the Galaxy.

Oh and you can totally sit in Kirk's chair and get your picture taken.

Once

onceposter.jpg

I suspect that everyone that has wanted to see Once has done so. I am a lame-o when it comes to getting to the theater and I'm not entirely sure that this came to my town anyway. In any case this seems like a fitting day to recommend an Irish movie.

I caught it on DVD this past week and I'll tell you that if the person that recommended this movie to me weren't in Texas I'd kiss him on his hairy facial cheek (so he should probably be glad he is). For those of you that don't appreciate my ancestral homeland's love of the F-bomb, you might want to steer clear (or possibly man up for 86 minutes). The beauty inherent in the music and the relationship between the guy and the girl far outweighs any objection you might have with the language.

For the uninitiated, this film is basically about a dude who makes music on the street for spare change (word of the day: busker) while helping his dad out at their hoover shoppe. He meets this girl and they hit it off and develop a relationship around making a demo tape for him. There are seeds of love there, but he has a girl that he's pinin' for and she has a hubby that she may want to get back with. I won't tell you how it turns out, see for yourself.

The actors are unknowns, picked I suppose for their real life talents and perhaps for the reason that they were these characters in a way most actors couldn't pull off. Also I imagine they worked on the cheap. In any event they done good.

The real star of this show as I said up top though, is the music. I need to get the soundtrack like yesterday. So go rent it. Now. That is all.

Cross Pollination

J.C. Hutchins (big fan right here) has sent an open invitation to bloggers, "I’m Your Billboard".

The man has a sizeable audience and more importantly and awesome idea.

Bloggers, this is your open invitation: Consider my show a billboard for your work.

If you want to promote your blog to thousands of engaged listeners, for free, here’s your chance. Create a one-minute audio promo for your blog, and send it to me. I’ll play it in an upcoming episode of my podcast. Boom, done-deal, no reciprocation required.

Don’t wig. Creating an audio promo is easy: Write up the quick “elevator pitch” about what your blog covers, include your URL … and that’s it. Record it with a computer mic and email it to me: 7thSonNovel@gmail.com. If you don’t have a computer mic, call this number and leave a voice mail: 206-984-0918. I guarantee I’ll play your promo in a future episode of my show.

If you have a blog and an audience that you're trying to reach, do this!

Watchpeanuts

Watchpeanuts.jpg

Drawn by Evan Shaner

On a whim I drew up a piece last week asking the question "What if Charles Schulz created the Watchmen?" and holy crap I had no idea people were going to like it. I posted it on Deviant Art and the darn thing spread like wildfire. So there you go, I guess I should draw more stuff based on jokes that might make Alan Moore angry.

Yes, yes you should.

Booyah indeed...

I am SOOO ready for this movie. The fact that GDT is doing The Hobbit (unconfirmed rumor)and that Ron Perlman will no doubt play some part in that, hopefully voicing Smaug at the very least(/unconfirmed rumor) cranks my geek up to twelve.

Ganked from Hollywood Born: Booyah!

Oh and then there's this piece of loveliness:
