It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve done this so here goes.

There are these things called podcasts that you should really really really look into. They’re free serialized audio files that you can play on your computer or download to your MP3 player. They run the gamut from audio books and audio dramas to self help and inspirational. I listen to a lot of them and am going to try and give you a run down of the best ones. So buckle up buttercup, this may take a while and if you subscribe to even one it will be a fun ride.

Fiction I’m Currently Listening To-

7th Son – This is by no means a new one. JC Hutchins podcast this bad boy for the first time back in 2007. Getting the word out now is particularly important because JC has a print deal with a major publisher and this goes live in its print version later this month. I will definitely be dropping more information on the blog when it happens. This is a sci-fi thriller that is hands down the best in that genre that I have had the pleasure of experiencing in some time. The basic premise is covered in this trailer. If that doesn’t make you strap in the earbuds I recommend you have someone check your pulse. If you listened, then you heard that right. Even if you don’t “do” podcasts he is giving away serialized PDFs/Blogtext versions of the book through other websites. No reason for you not to at least give it a look (unless pulse pounding, edge of your seat fiction isn’t your bag).

Fetidus – This is a dark trip through the slimy underground of Washington DC, but not just any Washington DC. In this universe there has been an apocalypse. Zombies, ghosts, and who knows what else have been unleashed on the world. And just like in the real world they have their own Political Action Committee. FETIDUS is the Foundation for the Ethical Treatment of the Innocently Damned, Undead, and Supernatural responsible for making sure that they are treated fairly. James Durham; author, musician, and producer is responsible along with a full voice cast, for for bringing us in to that world and fleshing it out and flesh it out he does. This work is one that you don’t listen to so much as you experience. He won two awards for it and is muchly deserving. I will warn you that this world is a dark place and not for the squeamish. Well worth your time.

The Gearheart – The tagline for this podcast is “Magic, Adventure, and Gunfights” and it delivers on all points. Alex White brings us the story of a secret society of wizards called the Seekers of the Arcane Unknown. They are charged with keeping the knowledge of magic from the populace at large while combating threats to their world and to the political powers they are in league with. A great mix of mystery, political intrigue, action, and suspense this story has been a lot of fun so far.

Great Hites – This is a short fiction anthology podcast and the truly cool thing about it is that anyone is welcome and encouraged to participate. Write your story according to the prompt and send it in. Can’t record? Now problem, they’ll do it for you. Right now Jeff Hite is asking for submissions for 10K word creation stories. Got an idea along those lines? Send them in.

Harvey – Is author Phil Rossi’s latest novella. This dark tale takes place in a little town of the same name. Harvey has some dark secrets and musician Calvin Hubbard, who only wants to make a little music and have a little fun, gets mixed up in the middle of it all.

How to Succeed in Evil – An efficiency expert for super villains is at the heart of this story. He gets tired of the latest crop of villains’ inefficiency and inability to listen to his stellar advice and takes matters into his own hands. This thing is absolutely LACED with humor, at times dark, but ever present. Patrick McLean is working on getting this published and I highly recommend that you give it a listen if you’re into seeing genres flipped on their head. Seeing a comic book world through the eyes of a smart and ruthless villain, that becomes likable through McLean’s excellent craft, is a trip worth taking.

Tumbler – Brand Gamblin is writing the sort of science fiction that I am rapidly becoming very fond of. It takes characters that seem as real as my next door neighbors and puts them in a futuristic world that’s less about ray guns and aliens and more about life on the frontier of space. Libby Carter lost everything that means anything to her, so she hitches a ride on a rocket in an effort to become an asteroid miner. Things don’t go quite as expected and she has to make the best of it. Can she survive? Tune in and see.

A Traders Diary – This is another one of those sorts of science fiction stories I’d like to here more of. Nathan Lowell tells the story of Ishmael Wang over the course of five books (so far). His mother, a university professor and his only family, dies and with her any chances he might have at a future. Or so he thinks. In desperation he joins the space fairing equivalent of the Merchant Marine. Starting out as nothing more than a mess mate on a trading vessel that sails the stars, isn’t his first choice, but it’s his only shot. He’s a “land rat”, one unwise in the ways of space, and no one else will take him. These stories are all about how far hard work, perseverance, and a little bit of luck will take you.

Well this post grows long and there are a lot more fiction casts I’ve wither listened to or will be listening to in the days/weeks/months to come, not to mention the non-fiction. More on the latter in a future post. Meanwhile if you’ve already listened to all of these you should also check out Metamor City, Murder at Avedon Hill, V & A Shipping, and anything Scott Sigler, Mur Lafferty, or Tee Morris puts out. You should also take a gander at Podiobooks. They have over 300 titles.

Okay I’ve mentioned Obsidian and how cool of an idea it is. Well Episodes 1-3 have come out.

Episodes one and two are a two-parter by Tee Morris of the fantasy ‘cast Morevi: Remastered. It’s a straight up, high tension piece. He defintely brings the full on nail biting as his character tries to make his way home through the nationwide blackout. Does he make it? Is his family safe? In Hutchins world nothing is a given. Go give parts one and two a listen.

Episode three is … a bit different. It is brought to us by TD-0013. Who’s that you ask? Well he’s an Storm Trooper. His ‘cast A Different Point of View is the Star Wars universe brought to us through the eyes of an Imperial insider. Funny stuff to be sure. So I can’t really describe it without giving some things away. I’ll just say that it’s a lot like Reese’s Cups and leave it at that. Go listen to it here. Heck you should probably just go subscribe. You won’t be sorry.

Also in closing, I thought I’d include this:

TD-0013 has performed the MS Walk for the past seven years in full Stormtrooper Replica armor from the Star Wars films. His team, the 501st Dune Sea Garrison makes the long trek each year in full Imperial regailia to try to bring more attention to the event, in the hopes that more money can be raised to fight this horrible disease.
Please help support a Trooper from our team as we make the trek in FULL ARMOR to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis.

Sooo cool.

J. C. Hutchins is the master of using new media and social networking to <s>pimp</s> get the word out on his projects. As a way of letting folks know about his latest project 7th Son: Obsidian he has put together some posters. You can’t get them all at his site, you have to go to several different places to collect them, a deranged Easter Egg hunt. It’s worth it though as these posters are dead cool.

Go here for the details.

So where do you hunt?

* J.C. Hutchins’ site, home of 7th Son: OBSIDIAN and the 7th Son podcast novel trilogy
* Science-fiction news blog io9.com
* Indie rock showcase podcast Accident Hash
* Science fiction podcast magazine Escape Pod
* Sci-fi short story podcast Variant Frequencies
* Website of bestselling novelist Scott Sigler
* Website of award-winning novelist Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff
* Website of author, podcaster and musician Matthew Wayne Selznick

Subscribe to the feeds on these sites and you’ll get the posters automagically.

What is Obsidian? Well if you haven’t been listening to my podcast, shame on you. I played the promo on my last ep. Click here to download just the Obsidian promo. If that doesn’t get your attention you better check your pulse. Basically Obsidian is a group project wherein some of the biggest podcasting talent on the net are playing in Hutch’s sandbox. Not just that, there’s also a metric buttload of fan generated content. It’s a world where paranoia, government conspiracies, and terrorists who can take over your mind are just the beginning. So get to downloading son!! If you need to catch up on the original trilogy, go here.

You will NOT be sorry.

It’s encouraging to see podcast authors that I’ve been listening to for months/years experiencing so much success.

Playing For Keeps by Mur Lafferty was picked up by Swarm Press. Jack Palms by Seth Harwood will be put out by Crown next year. And of course Scott Sigler’s novel Infected was put out by Crown this year and is doing very well for a first novel.

I own Infected and will no doubt buy PFK and JP:1. The stories rocked in audio form and I like doing my part to encourage authors using non-traditional means to get the stories that we want to hear out there. Oh just like me! In fact all of these folks are the ones who’ve inspired my efforts. So if you don’t like Archangel, blame Scott/Mur/Seth.

I’ll be putting up some reviews and pimping other podcasts over the next few weeks. If you have an MP3 player and enjoy audio books (I know, not everyone does) you could do worse than give these guys a listen.

Also if you’re reading this and are a Christian podcaster/writer and would like to cross-promote/collaborate let me know!

Due to the retreat I was unable to record this weekend, but I should be able to lay down tracks tonight. I may have made inroads toward getting some better sound equipment thanks to a buddy at church. Until then audio quality won’t be as good as I’d like it to be.

If you want to subscribe to my podcast in your favorite podcatcher just use this url http://www.spiritualtramp.com/index.xml. I haven’t submitted to iTunes yet because I need to figure out how to get MT to pass the right data to iTunes. When I get that up and running I’ll let y’all know.

If anyone in the audience knows how to get MT to cooperate let me know.

Haven’t done this in a while, so I figure it’s time.

How to Succeed in Evil – The breakdown.

How to Succeed in Evil is not a self-help page for the maladjusted. It it is the story of Edwin Windsor, Evil Efficiency Consultant. He’s like Arthur Anderson for Supervillians.

How to Succeed in Evil is not a self-help page for the maladjusted. It is the story of Edwin Windsor, Evil Efficiency Consultant. He’s like Arthur Anderson for Supervillians.
Just because a person can melt walls by winking at them or build a device to threaten the very fabric of our reality doesn’t mean that they know how to manage investments or squeeze money out of a scheme. Just look at M.C. Hammer. (Not that’s he’s evil or super — just that he’s exquisitely bad with money.)

This is a novella. It clocks in at ten episodes all fairly short. Patrick McLean, the writer, voices it himself and does a great job. This iteration leaves you wanting more and fortunately he’s providing it. The novel is in progress. Making a villain “sympathetic” without making him pathetic is a challenge. Patrick succeeds. I found myself rooting for Edwin and his viciously evil sidekick

The Metamor City Podcast – This is someone who is taking a concept very similar to Shadowrun and cranking it up to awesome.

The stories of The Metamor City Podcast take place in a high-magic, high-technology setting, an epic fantasy world projected into the near future. The action focuses primarily on the inhabitants of Metamor City, a mega-metropolis that is also the capital of the world’s largest superpower, the Empire of Metamor.

Chris Lester is the author and narrator in addition to doing some of the voices. This is one of those ‘casts that includes a number of voice actors and some great production values. The first few eps are short stories. Now he’s into a novel in this world featuring some characters from the shorts and some new ones. I actually enjoyed the short stories more. That’s not a ding against the longer work at all though.

FYI there’s some adult content here, which you get a heads up on. Sometimes that gets in the way of the story imo, but the sexuality of the telepaths is really interesting. Imagine if sex extended to melding of minds as well as bodies. “Teeps” do a mind meld thing during any intimate contact and that can be dangerous. In addition to that though there’s a really interesting analog to Christianity that I’m thoroughly diggin on. As a writer myself it would be a detail I’d include, but maybe not as well as Chris has.

Morevi: The Chronicles of Rafe & Askana – I thoroughly enjoyed Tee Morris’s Case of the Singing Sword, a unique mix of fantasy and noir detective story so subscribing to this was a no brainer. This is thoroughly fantasy though there are characters from our own past.

Morevi, a landlocked kingdom shrouded by jungles and mystery, falls under the rule of Askana Moldarin, known in her realm as “The Black Widow” following her swift and bloody ascent to the throne. In the dawn of this New Age, hidden traitors in her own regime threaten to destroy everything. Askana, independent of council, seeks help to reveal the conspiracy against her… Enter Rafe Rafton, captain of the Defiant.

This ‘cast is a remastered version of one that came out a few years back. The music, voice acting, and effects are great. This is another one of those ‘casts that reminds me of radio drama. Purposely, I’m guessing. This is another very rich world populated by interesting characters.

Writing fantasy and coming up with something new is a challenge I’m sure. I’ve tried it myself with mixed results. Tee’s been at this a while and his hard work and passion shows. You’d do well to subscribe to this and The Case of the Singing Sword (available at Podiobooks.com)

There are more (so many more), but this’ll do for now.

This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for many moons. I’m a huge fan of what Steve does at EsacpePod, PseudoPod, and what PodCastle will be doing. That is have a paying market for artists to sell their audio rights to. So here’s what I’m thinking of as far as submission guidlines go.
Length - 2,000 to 6,000 words long. That seems to work well for what I’m hearing over at Steve’s place.
Licensing – I’d use the Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 license.
Content - This is the tricky bit. I would want it to be Christian speculative fiction.
Pay - It will. Not sure how much to start, but I don’t want anyone to work for free who doesn’t want to.
What is speculative fiction? That would be fantasy/sci-fi.
What does it mean to be Christian fiction? Well my wife and I talked about that. In a nutshell (and I’ll expand upon this as things start to gel) it would mean that the story would have to communicate some aspect of the Gospel. It wouldn’t have to nail everything down since that might be asking a bit much. I’d be looking for things along the lines of what Ted Dekker writes. I’d say it needs to steer clear of excessive violence, sexual content and profanity. I’m not looking for rated G stuff (though that would be fine), but defintely no R. I don’t want allegory (unless it’s just REALLY good).
So I need your help. One, would you listen? Two, would you contribute? Three, I’m mulling over names and will take any suggestions.

I saw the newest Bourne movie and it was good. It would have been reeeeally nice if i had rented number two first. It’s not a must, but it’s a good idea.
I caught up on Jekyll on BBCA. I’m not sure if BBCA rawks so much because American TV largely sucks or if it just does because it does. Either way, we win!
We went on a trek to Pilot Mountain. I will post pics tonight.
I rented Hot Fuzz. If you are like me and tend not to make it to some of the awesome movies while they’re still in the theater, you should make this a priority rental. It has a fair amount of British swearing, a surprising amount of grue, references Point Break and Bad Boys 2 a number of times, and all of that works in a remarkably hilarious way.
I did manage a short Tech Stew cast, solo this go ’round due to someone else having a social life (and no he didn’t call first).
I also managed to make it on The Political Ride though not the Religious one. Next week I’m planning to make it to all three.

The Religious Ride will remain as is, Sunday nights at 10 est, and we (including Bear) had a rollicking good time last night discussing Islam and the decline of the American church. The Political Ride moves to Monday nights at 9 est. Tonight I expect I shall school the young lad on a number of issues including why the President made a grievous error in commuting Libby’s sentence. There is some action at my tumblelog.
I am going to be participating in the Rocky Mountain Ride shows so that should be interesting. I’m sure we’ll talk about the Republican “debate” a bit and who knows what all. The religious show will continue to find its way. We’ll be talking about simple churches aka house churches at some point in the near future, hopefully with a special guest. Maybe a bit about the religious right with the passing of Mr. Falwell.
So go outside, enjoy the beautiful weather, and please call in to one of our lovely podcasts!!!

I intend this to be a paying market and am looking for people who can contribute in any way. I’ve had a few nibbles from the email and I think that I can make this happen.
If you want to have a story of yours put into a podcast, if you want to read for me, or if you’d just like to start a conversation about what “Christian” fiction is exactly, drop a comment here.
I’ll let you know more as things progress. Oh and feel free to link this from your own blog/website if you are so inclined.

If you aren’t listening to some of these then you’re missing some fiiiine fiction. Better than most of the stuff on the tube. You don’t need an iPod or even an MP3 player as you can listen to these on the PC.

Number One With a Bullet – Assassins are ruthless and clever killers who get paid a lot of money to make problems go away. And pretty soon one of them is going to be a hundred million dollars richer if they can eliminate all the competition, before the competition eliminates them. But for retired hitman Johnny Dane, considered at one point to be the best hired killer in the world, getting out of the life doesn’t necessarily mean getting out of the game.
Welcome to the world of high-priced hitmen and the game they’ve been thrust into. The last man (or woman) standing not only gets the prize but will be the only top notch assassin left available for hire. One of the top ten best killers has been notoriously absent from the contest, Johnny Dane. Having left the life, he’s disappeared to an oceanfront hideaway and has vowed never to return, but when the game finds him and threatens the only woman he’s ever loved, Dane realizes the only way out, is to get back in.
The Rookie – Set amongst a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future. Aliens play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that – literally – want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed and rival players are assasinated.
Follow the story of Quentin Barnes, a 19-year-old quarterback prodigy that has been raised all his life to hate, and kill, those aliens. Quentin must deal with his racism and learn to lead, or he’ll wind up just another stat in the column marked “killed on the field.”
7th Son – The story of seven strangers who have been brought together after the recent assassination of the U.S. president. These men quickly discover they all appear to be the same man … with identical childhood memories.
Unwitting participants in a human cloning experiment, these “John Michael Smiths” have been assembled to catch the man who murdered the president. Their target? The man they were cloned from; the original John Michael Smith, code-named John Alpha.
What are you waiting for? Go listen!!!

Technical:
Coolness Roundup – short daily podcasts on cool geek stuff and one on the weekend
Daily GizWiz – Leo Laporte and Mad writer Dick DeBartolo have a wacky daily podcast on gadgets old and new
Inside the Net – Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte talk about what’s hawt on the net
Security Now! – Steve Gibson, the man who coined the term spyware and created the first anti-spyware program, creator of Spinrite and ShieldsUP, discusses the hot topics in security today with Leo Laporte
This Week in Tech – weekly roundtable
Literary
Cory Doctrow – great sci-fi writer
Shadow Falls – This is like an old school radio show. It’s got some great production values and is a lot of fun. Very spooky.
The Rookie – A podcast novel, well performed (not just read) by the author, Scott Sigler. It combines aliens, football, organized crime, and as a result of those things lots and LOTS of violence. As Scott says give this thing four chapters (I say two) and you’ll be hooked.
NPR
Since I don’t have radio in my office and I’m an NPR junkie I also catch
All Songs ConsideredNPR: Shuffle
