Since he’s a frequent commenter and given my love for these things I figured I’d go for it. Narrowing it down is a bit hard, but I think I can do it. The usual rules apply:

Link to the person who tagged you. Check

Mention the rules.Check

Tell six unspectacular quirks of yours. In progress…

Tag six bloggers by linking. In progress…

Leave a comment for each blogger.In progress…

Scott’s Six Quirks!

I can’t stand seeing a flipped up collar or shirt tage. If I see the corner of your collar turned up or your tag sticking out I will turn it down (if I know you). I’m not talking about the ’80s style. If you’re still sporting that I won’t help you.

I love to argue. I will argue with almost anyone about almost anything. If you don’t have a sense of humor about what we’re arguing about I’ll give up eventually.

Even though my email is set to auto refresh periodically I will still refresh it manually. I LOVE email.

I tend to over commit myself. I get a great idea and it usually fizzles out.

…

…

from Janet

This week the infamous Razzies released their list of nominations. If you don’t know what the Razzies are, simply think of the Oscars on opposite day. They honor the best just like the Oscars do, only in the Razzies case, they honor the best of the worst. Which leads me to today’s question…
What do you think were the worst performances of the year? In the name of expansion this could be the worst movie or acting in a movie, worst TV show or even worst album or song. Feel free to write as little or as much that comes to mind.

Hmmmm, I don’t watch that many movies so I like to make sure that the ones I DO watch are pretty good. TV opens it up.
Here’s one (in the spirit of the song):

Though it could be said that it was pretty convincing to some folks in NH I reckon.
If I could give a Razzie for Worst OS I think it would go to Windows Vista hands down. I can’t think of an operating system previously that had people clamoring for a downgrade.
For Worst Board Game I have to say it would be this:

A game based on Joel Osteens book.
Worst Idea for a Reality TV Show ever? Kid Nation. Whoever thought that up needs to…. You know I can’t really think of anything suitable.
That’s some pretty bad stuff right there.
That’s about all I have for now. What about you guys?

I’m getting my year in review posted at another blog which I will link to next week, so instead I shall <strike>ste</strike> ahem borrow an idea from Strange Culture and so I present My Personal Favorites of 2007.

Favorite 2007-released movie, so far: I don’t see many movies in the theater. That’s truly unfortunate, but there you have it. I think I’ll have to go with 3:10 to Yuma. It was a truly great western and an all around good flick. Hot Fuzz comes reeeeeally close.
Favorite non-2007 movies seen for the first time this past year: Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Children of Men (2006)
Favorite Books I’ve read this year: World War Z and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Favorite TV Shows to Watch: House, Good Eats
Favorite Song: “War Inside” by Todd Agnew
Favorite New CD: Better Questions by Todd Agnew
Favorite Podcast: 7th Son by JC Hutchins, Escape Pod
Favorite Webcomic: Order of the Stick
What’re yours?

MCF, knowing how much I love memes, tagged me with an astrological one.The month meme has the following rules:
1. Mention the person who tagged you and create a link back to them.
2. Copy-paste the traits for all the twelve months (see below).
3. Pick your month of birth.
4. Highlight the traits that apply to you.
5. Tag 12 people and let them know by visiting their blogs and leaving a comment for them.
6. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve done it!
So click on if you <strike>care</strike> dare.

I’m not a believer in astrology at all, but I figure as MCF says that these are vague enough that anyone can apply a few of the ones in their month to themselves and this kind of stuff has a strange appeal. Mainly the “group of strangers forming a web community” thing. So here’s me.
JULY: Fun to be with. Secretive. Difficult to fathom and to be understood (so my wife says). Quiet unless excited or tensed. Takes pride in oneself. Has reputation. Easily consoled. Honest. Concerned about people’s feelings. Tactful. Friendly. Approachable. Emotional temperamental and unpredictable. Moody and easily hurt. Witty (or so I think)and sparkly (hardly). Not revengeful. Forgiving but never forgets. Dislikes nonsensical and unnecessary things. Guides others physically and mentally. Sensitive and forms impressions carefully. Caring and loving. Treats others equally. Strong sense of sympathy. Wary and sharp. Judges people through observations. Hardworking. No difficulties in studying. Loves to be alone. Always broods about the past and old friends. Likes to be quiet. Homely person. Waits for friends. Never looks for friends. Not aggressive unless provoked. Prone to having stomach and dieting problems. Loves to be loved (who doesn’t?). Easily hurt but takes long to recover.
I’m interested (narcissist that I am) what any of you might think about which ones might apply to me that I haven’t chosen.
Tagging (I tag them in part hoping they’ll meme on but mostly because these are blogs you should read):
Sid
Pat

This week’s question from Janet is a simple one with the possibility of being a long, detailed answer:
“What are your favorite songs with a name in the title?”
Well no long detailed answer, but as MCF usually does I do provide YouTube videos of each.

Roxanne (Police) – I have a feeling that this one will be the first one to pop into many heads. It’s defintely a favorite of mine, but most of the resonance for me comes from Eddie Murphy’s rendition of it at the beginning of 48 Hours.
Levon (John/Hicks) – I really had no idea that there was a drummer by this name. Anyway, this song jumps to mind particularly because of Taylor Hicks and his phenomenal performance in the only season of Idol that I watched.

The Ballad of Billy the Kid (Joel) – I love the self referential quality in this song.

A Boy Named Sue (Cash) – I don’t think any list of songs containing a proper name (and there are soooo many of those aren’t there?) would be complete without this song. One should be careful when naming one’s children.

That’s what springs to my mind. How about you?

I’ve always felt like the jobs I’ve had have been more out of necessity than choice. The results really weren’t all that surprising. In some ways I’m in the right field, but there are other things that I could be doing that I’d enjoy as much or more.

MCF posted this and I love me some lists, so here you go.

1) What was the highlight of your week?
We’ll make it this week past. I’d have to say watching my kids climb rocks, discovering new ones to climb and announcing it with a hearty “Look, more rocks!” while we were at Pilot Mountain.
2) Whose car were you in last?
Mine.
3) When was the last time you kissed someone?
This morning, kissing each of my children in turn and finishing with the wife.
4) What color shirt are you wearing?
Black with orange and red flowers and paisley.

5) How long is your hair?
I’d say about 3/4s of an inch.
6) Last movie you saw?
Hot Fuzz!
7) Last thing you ate?
A chocolate “Cutie Pie”.
What was last thing you drank?
Coffee.
9) Are you happy right now?
Sure.
10) What did you say last?
“Bye.”
11) Where is your phone?
Cell? On my M&M truck. Landline? Four feet away.
12) What was the last museum you went to?
Ooooh. Don’t remember. I’m gonna say the local kid’s museum and it’s been at least a year.
13) Who came over last?
To my house I guess that would be our landlord’s electrician to install a security light. Until then we were insecure.
14) Who/what do you hate/dislike currently?
Hate’s a mighty strong word. I’m gonna say Brussels Sprouts.
15) What are you listening to?
People in the hall. Sometimes I forget to queue up the next thing on my iPod after I sync it. There, NPR Shuffle.
16) If you could have one thing right now what would it be?
I could go all “Things don’t make you happy.” but I’d like a decent newer commuter vehicle with AC.
17) What are your favorite stores?
Those brick and mortar things? I’ll go with the local used bookstore, Ed McKay’s, and the local coffee shop, Krankies.
18) What makes you the happiest right now?
My kids, my wife, and learning to juggle three clubs.
19) What were you doing at midnight last night?
Trying to get to sleep.
20) Are you left-handed?
My left hand is stupid. It causes most of my typos.
21) What’s for dinner tonight?
I rarely know the answer to that question, but my wife’s cooking so it must be good.
22) When Is Your Birthday?
July 14th.
23) Who was the last person to send you a text message?
Ben.
24) When is the last time you were in a swimming pool?
Last summer. I haven’t been to the pool this summer. That’s amazing.
25) Where was the last place you went shopping?
The grocery store, Harris Teeter specifically.
26) How do you feel about your hair right now?
It’s there, so good.
27) Do you have any expensive jewelry?
My wedding band wasn’t cheap so I guess yeah. Expensive is subjective though.
28) AIM or MSN?
Yahoo?
29) What was the first thing you thought when you woke up this morning?
Coffee. While that may not be accurate it’s the closest thing to coherent thought I usually ever have.
30) Do you drink beer?
Oh yes.
31) Who do you miss?
I’ll echo MCF and say my college buds. I see some of them but only rarely. I miss them all though, even the pains in the neck.
32) MySpace or Facebook?
Feh. Kids and their fancy, shmancy social networks. In my day we had to stumble over people with similar interests. Then we’d have to apologize.
33) What was your favorite subject in school?
Study hall.
34) Do you have any talents?
I say writing. To do anything this badly for this long must take talent. Or possibly a masochistic streak.
35) Do you have any children?
Yup.
36) Did you take a nap today?
Nope.
37) Ever met someone famous?
Andy Griffith. He’s from where I went to High School and visited my music appreciation class.
38) Do you want to be famous one day?
Infamous.
39) Could you handle being in the military?
Now, maybe. Not so much when I was a kid. I hated authority.
40) Ever been to Las Vegas?
Nope and don’t want to.
41) When is the last time you updated your blog?
2007-09-04 12:57:23
42) Have you been to New York City?
Yes and I’d like to go back. When I went it was with a high school group and it was very much a tour.
43) Ever been to Disneyland/world?
Yup and much like NY I’d like to experience it more freestyle.
44) Last thing you cooked?
I’ll go with customizing a pizza (adding veggies to a meat pizza from Wally World’s deli. I love to cook from scratch, but it doesn’t happen very often.
45) Stupidest thing you ever did with your cell phone?
I don’t recall ever doing anything stupid with it.
46) Last time you were sick?
Stomach virus towards the end of the last school year.
47) Do you think anyone will repost this?
One never knows.

Okay so I’ve been tagged by Bear (which makes me giddy, no one ever tags me) to do the “Eight Things” meme. I’m keepin’ it light because there are many things I could put here that aren’t ready for prime time. So without further adieu here are eight things you don’t know about me.

1) At the tender age of eight, I and a friend of mine set a HUUUGE grassfire. I distinctly remember trying to put it out by filling my sneaker with water and using that. I also recall running like mad when I discovered that that didn’t work and the spanking I got from Mom.
2) I went to my senior prom with my ex-girlfriend and we doubled with my best friend and his girlfriend (whom I had an intense crush on). I do not recommend this as a course of action. Bad for one’s self esteem.
3) I didn’t learn to ride a bike until I was nineteen. I didn’t get my driver’s license until I was twenty-five. Needless to say, I walked a lot in college.
4) I recieved a citation for shooting off illegal fireworks. For that I did community service at a women’s shelter cutting kudzu and working on their computer.
5) I’ve been baptized twice. I’m still not sure that that second one “took”.
6) I was big into role playing games both in high school and college. My favorite RPG is Champions and I take my most common username from a guy whose power was the ability to change into a giant koala with super strength.
7) I preached a number of sermons for a Methodist church we attended in Greenville. I love getting up and speaking in front of people. I utterly failed at student teaching. My cooperating teacher asked me to be removed from the program. I latter found out from my wife through the teacher’s grape vine that she (the teacher not my wife) had accused me of cussing out one of my classes.
Tagging Two Guys, RC, Gray, and really anyone else that’s reading this.

According to <a title="SwanShadow Thinks Out Loud: Serenity best? Joss say no!” href=”http://www.swanshadow.com/2007/04/serenity-best-joss-say-no.html”>SwanShadow Thinks Out Loud British movie magazine SFX lists the following as the Top Ten Science Fiction movies of all time:
1. Serenity.
2. Star Wars
3. Blade Runner
4. Planet of the Apes
5. The Matrix
6. Alien
7. Forbidden Planet
8. 2001: A Space Odyssey
9. The Terminator
10. Back to the Future
Rather than give my reactions (Swan Shadow’s are good) I think I shall attempt my own listage.

This is in chronological order. Also I know that there are films that deserve to be on this list that aren’t. In some ways this is more of a “favorite” list than a “best movie” list.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) – The first sci-fi movie I remember watching. While I haven’t watched it in years I would have been remiss not to include it.
Them (1954) – This is my all time favorite giant irradiated monster movie. I rank it higher than Godzilla mainly because this was actually scary to me and that ant noise still creeps me out.
Planet of the Apes (1968) – I love this movie (the whole series really) in an unholy way. I got the boxed set which included a behind the scenes doc on making all of the monkey movies and that just deepened my respect.
Alien (1979) – Sci-fi and scary just go together so well, don’t they? I remember seeing this as a kid and still have the emotional scars to prove it. I couldn’t really make a successful argument as to which is better, this or its sequel, but I really wanted another 70′s movie so this won.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981) – I think this is the best of the Max movies to paint the picture of just how far the world has moved on. That plus the boomerang kid sold this completely as being numero uno.
Blade Runner (1982) – Several movies have tried to capture the truly odd worlds of Phillip K. Dick and I think that this is the only one that has really succeeded so far. That plus the really noir feel that it has and the fact that it starred Harrison when he still had something going on made this an obvious choice for me.
Ghostbusters (1984) – Okay so I had to include one movie that was intentionally funny. I love Bill Murray and all the gang and I think this is a strong choice.
Brazil (1985) – I saw this thing on video store shelves for years and always said no. Then a good friend gave me a copy and I watched it and… well I’m glad I did. Gilliam likes to do things that not only push the boundaries but kick them in their teeth (do boundaries have teeth?). If you haven’t seen this, then you must rectify that immediately.
The Fly (1986) – I almost gave this slot to the original. I was like this close. You can’t see how far apart I’m holding my fingers but it’s really close. Making it hard to type really. Anyway, then I remembered that this movie is just better. Sometimes a remake is not a bad thing.
The Iron Giant (1999) – I had to include an animated flick and this one always brings me closest to tears of any other movie. It captures the essence of fifties sci-fi and distills it into something pure and magical. And Vin rawks.
Probably should be on here:
John Carpenter’s The Thing – I have just never been able to get into this and I realize that that’s a character flaw on my part.
2001: A Space Odyssey - Long. Boring. Pretentious. Or I’m an idiot.
The Incredible Shrinking Man – I know that this is a good movie, but couldn’t justify including it on rep alone and it had been too, too long since I’ve seen it uninterrupted. If I even have.
Metropolis – Silent movie. Never seen it.
Forbidden Planet – This was another one that fought for a spot. It was tussling with The Day. I think I made the right choice.
Dr. Strangelove – I don’t really see this as sci-fi per se, but I love it and it was on a lot of other lists. So I stuck it here.
Gattaca – I actually really quite like this and I think that it has potential to be a classic on day. Just not yet.
