I suspect that everyone that has wanted to see Once has done so. I am a lame-o when it comes to getting to the theater and I’m not entirely sure that this came to my town anyway. In any case this seems like a fitting day to recommend an Irish movie.
I caught it on DVD this past week and I’ll tell you that if the person that recommended this movie to me weren’t in Texas I’d kiss him on his hairy facial cheek (so he should probably be glad he is). For those of you that don’t appreciate my ancestral homeland’s love of the F-bomb, you might want to steer clear (or possibly man up for 86 minutes). The beauty inherent in the music and the relationship between the guy and the girl far outweighs any objection you might have with the language.
For the uninitiated, this film is basically about a dude who makes music on the street for spare change (word of the day: busker) while helping his dad out at their hoover shoppe. He meets this girl and they hit it off and develop a relationship around making a demo tape for him. There are seeds of love there, but he has a girl that he’s pinin’ for and she has a hubby that she may want to get back with. I won’t tell you how it turns out, see for yourself.
The actors are unknowns, picked I suppose for their real life talents and perhaps for the reason that they were these characters in a way most actors couldn’t pull off. Also I imagine they worked on the cheap. In any event they done good.
The real star of this show as I said up top though, is the music. I need to get the soundtrack like yesterday. So go rent it. Now. That is all.

Here all Star Trek’s worlds “collide” under one magnificent soaring roof. The collection before you is considered the most complete and authentic collection of Star Trek items in existence — and that’s anywhere in the Galaxy.

Favorite 2007-released movie, so far: I don’t see many movies in the theater. That’s truly unfortunate, but there you have it. I think I’ll have to go with 3:10 to Yuma. It was a truly great western and an all around good flick. Hot Fuzz comes reeeeeally close.
Favorite non-2007 movies seen for the first time this past year: Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Children of Men (2006)
Favorite Books I’ve read this year: World War Z and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Favorite TV Shows to Watch: House, Good Eats
Favorite Song: “War Inside” by Todd Agnew
Favorite New CD: Better Questions by Todd Agnew
Favorite Podcast: 7th Son by JC Hutchins, Escape Pod
Favorite Webcomic: Order of the Stick
What’re yours?

Seeing a shirt on Threadless (posted to my tumblelog) that “spoils” a few classics and one or two recent movies got me to thinking. What should the shelf life on spoilers be?
I don’t get out to the movies much and as a result have missed a fair number of “classics”. For me to moan or complain because someone spoiled the surprise ending of say The Others for me a good six months after it had come out, would be silly. I realize that some amount of the viewing experience could be adversely affected if certain details are revealed and we should respect that to a reasonable degree, but that’s too much to ask. For a movie I would argue that if you know something that you consider spoilerish, you should protect it for about the first month as best you can.
The nice thing about the internet is that you can generally provide a layer of protection from spoilers with good use of hyperlinks and colored text, but what about real life? If you’re talking about a movie and one of the people in the conversation hasn’t seen it yet and requests that the talk remain spoiler free, you should certainly honor that. That’s especially true if the person is a spouse or significant other. If it’s a geeky friend then you have every right to give them crap about it or possibly give them three bucks to rent it, depending on the level of charity you’re feeling.
So what if it’s a movie that has just come out on DVD? Given the one month rule, should spoilers still be announced? By then, most people who’ll really care about the movie in question will probably have seen it and if they haven’t then they’re on their own.
If the movie has been out on DVD for more than a year and someone grouses then you should be able to blow them off. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.
What do you think?

Sleeping is a treat since as a busy husband and dad I never get enough.
My but that bed looks like it sleeps good.
I lurve to read and don’t get to enough.
Video games. Where else can you do so many cool things and not suffer any bad consequences other than a bit of eye strain.
Walking around looking at old stuff appeals.
I can’t go through a day without the coffee. Addicted? *twitch* Nonsense.
It started the end of last year and updates on Mondays.
Steampunk (Time Machine meets Mona Lisa Overdrive) is a great genre and one that I’ve considered fiddling with a bit myself. I found David’s comic from a banner ad on Studio Foglio’s Buck Godot webcomic. I also quite enjoy Girl Genius, also by the Foglios and an excellent example of steampunk itself.
Hope you enjoy!

Geek’s geek Wil Wheaton has written up a post both on his blog,WWdN: In Exile: Geek in Review: Pac-Man Fever, and Suicide Girls (not gonna link that generally NSFW site) that has to do with the passing of an American icon, the video game arcade.

I have to say that as a person born in the seventies I have many happy memories of plugging buckets full of quarters into arcade games.
When I was a wee laddy in Arkansas there was an arcade that you could go to on a dreary Saturday morning and pay just a few ducats to play for four hours. It was here that I first saw Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace. I remember playing a game that involved steering a hook and ladder truck. Tapper, Centipede, Pac-Man, Wizards of Wor, all of these games and more filled the smallish space with a cacophony.
I remember a game show that involved besting your opponent at a variety of video games.
I remember playing Ms. Pac-Man with my Mom while we waited for our laundry to dry.
As I got older I remember hitting the arcade with my best buddy Bear and blowing serious change on Zaxxon, Cabal, and a side scrolling plane shoot-em up that he rocked at.
I remember the game room in the basement of Mendenhall.
I don’t know that I lament the Arcade’s passing as much as Wil does and I’m not sure that it’s gone all together. I do know that if I ever get to build my own house though, it will have a game room and I will teach my kids the joys of hearing “Prepare to qualify.”

Today I feel like I hit mine. Which made me finding this entry of Irregular Webcomic! a little funnier.
For those who don’t know the Roche Limit

is the distance within which a celestial body held together only by its own gravity will disintegrate due to a second celestial body’s tidal forces exceeding the first body’s gravitational self-attraction. Inside the Roche limit, orbiting material will tend to disperse and form rings, while outside the limit, material will tend to coalesce. The term is named after Édouard Roche, the French astronomer who first calculated this theoretical limit in 1848.

And much like a celestial body that has been put under too much gravitational stress I feel like bursting into rings! But I won’t. Not today. Today I will remember 1 Peter 4:11.

If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

And for those who don’t know, Irregular Webcomic! is a long running well webcomic done by a guy using miniatures and Legos. And he even manages to work in all sorts of little physics lessons. But don’t just take my word for it, CLICK THE LINK!

I did indeed LOL, though I did not ROTFL, but I totally could have since I have my own office. Incidentally if you’re a gamer (or like me a former gamer) then click the pic to start at the beginning of this lovely webcomic!
