After leaving pastoral ministry, I worked in the college textbook business for about a decade. Decided I wanted to do something more meaningful with my life and started working with mentally retarded folk in the supported employment area. Because of problems with my boss who was overinvested in the program I was running and because the paperwork due to medicaid was getting ridiculous, I burned out and decided to do something totally different so now my day job is working in a factory building diesel engines while I attempt to write a book on the relationship of Christians to the state and honin my skills as a musician. I am a singer and I have played some professional trombone.

Great post Bob.. with a name like that I would expect no less :)

I commend you for not acquiescing to the pressures to make it in ministry by entering pastoral ministry. Sad that so many are not as self-aware as you are. I think that the pulpit is a powerful force and seduces many into pastoral ministry when they are called to something else.

If you get a chance you might want to check my thoughts out on this in these posts:

http://redeemed.kansasbob.com/2007/03/invisible...
http://redeemed.kansasbob.com/2006/03/religious...

PS: What profession did you end up in?
