Social Networks

I’ve been trying a variety of social networks lately. I’ll freely admit that a big reason I join most of them is to continue to try and get the word out about my projects. That was certainly a huge part of why I joined Twitter. Of course it’s also nice to make new friends and find out about cool things. As a result I have tried the following social networks:
Facebook – I guess this is one of the granddaddies of social stuff on the net. I didn’t join FB for the self-promotion, though I do post my stuff there. I mainly joined it to a) connect with old friends and b) connect with some Twitter folks. This one has definitely stuck, primarily because it’s filled with a good mix of people I know now, people I knew then, and people I am getting to know. Yes I’m one of those people that plays the games and sends the “chain letters/memes”. I’ve probably annoyed my share of folks with that.
My Life Ministries – This is a Christian SN site that both my blog and Archangel are a part of. I haven’t been active over there nearly enough. That’s kind of a shame. They’re a good bunch of folks. They work to support/promote Christian bloggers/podcaster.
Cult Vault – Not a bad place to hang, this one is more artist centric. Their big promise is “no drama”, something most message boards get filled with quickly. I’m not drawn here as much as I thought I would be since it seems to be more about musicians than writers.
Linked-In – LI is no great secret. It’s all about leveraging your business relationships into new opportunities. It’s not really a place to hang out unless your focus is dramatically different from mine.
Twitter – I REALLY like Twitter. This is social networking at it’s most basic. If you don’t know what it is, it’s called “micro-blogging” which isn’t really accurate. Tumblr is more of a microblog. Twitter is closer to an IM client, but it has the permanency of a blog and provided you haven’t protected your updates it also has the visibility of a blog.
Dad-Blogs – I just joined this one. We’ll see how it pans out. This isn’t a “Dad Blog” per se, but I do post occasionally about family stuff so I think I qualify. It seems on the surface to be a good place. The site looks great and they have a lot of contests to try and get folks involved.
What about you? Where are you social on the net?
