God and Politics

I have to give Ray and Steve, the pair behind the relatively new podcast Beyond the Box some props. I’ve listened to every one of their shows so far and every one has been edifying. Now that’s not to say I always agree with them and if you’re conservative religiously I guarantee you’ll be at odds with some things they day, but it will give you something to chew over.

Their latest show, Is God a Democrat or a Republican? – Part 1 is a great example. The only thing I’ll tell you is one of the phrases they used will now be part of my quote library. As Christians we don’t “clean the fish”. Our job is not to convict others of their sins. That’s square in God’s hands. That kind of goes hand in hand with a C.S. Lewis quote left in my comments box by long time commenter Sid.

“One of the marks of a certain type of bad man is that he cannot give up something himself without wanting every one else to give it up. That is not the Christian way. An individual Christian may see fit to give up all sorts of things for special reasons – marriage, or meat, or beer, or the cinema; but the moment he starts saying the things are bad in themselves, or looking down his nose at other people who do use them, he has taken a wrong turning.”

That’s got little to do with the God and Politics portion of the show, but it’s a good indication of where these guys are coming from theologically. Subscribe to their podcast. You’ll be glad you did.

God is a Republican and Santa Claus is a Democrat. According to PJ O’Rourke, anyway. Details here.
Total change of topic, but I had to make sure that the blogger who turned me onto “Jesus Is My Friend” saw this.

    Oh. Dear. Lord.

I don’t see an embed code, which is tragic.

    That video is tight.

Even asking the question is on par with: Is God a New York Yankee fan or a Boston Red Sox fan?

God is so far above the temporary man-made labels we use.

I think it’s more akin to asking if Frodo Bagins prefers paper or plastic at the check out.

Thanks for the props, Scott! So nice to have you as a listener. Part 2 (the conclusion) of this topic was posted this morning.
