Community Coffee

I think I’m in love.

I was in Baton Rouge Wednesday and Thursday and while in the airport on my way back bought a bag of this lovely product. I brewed a pot in my Chemex this morning and it’s awesome! Black as Donald Trump’s heart and quite a bit thicker than his wallet, I was a little afraid that it would be bitter. I did add a little bit of sugar and my wife inadvertently put a dollop of whipped cream on top, and it tasted every bit like a really top notch cappuccino. Tomorrow I’ll make some and drink it straight up black, to see how different it is. Chicory is the root of the endive plant and contains a high concentration of a natural sugar called inulin. Now see, you done learned somethin’ I gah-ron-tee.

I do love my Café du Monde coffee, but I really think it’s better french-pressed and with steamed milk and a little sugar added. Chicory leaves a distinctly bitter taste in some people’s mouths (including mine).

I’m going to try it tomorrow in my french press here at work. And the whole cafe au lait thing is good in my book. I didn’t notice any bitterness in this morning’s brew. Maybe that has a little something to do with the coffee that it’s blended with? Community is smoove.

I think chicory just reacts differently with people. It could be the mix, the brew strength, the water…literally anything, but I think it’s a lot about different people and their different taste buds. I’ll try to find some of this though.

I loved Café du Monde when we visited New Orleans a few years back. I was reacquainted with the great taste last month when a friend brought some in to work.
