&lt;p&gt;I&#039;ve noticed the only time a social stigma is not attached is when it involves a sports geek.  (That&#039;s another rant entirely.)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;My point is, people are often geeks because of an obsessive involvement with something.  In a word, a geek is: selfish.  So I congratulate you for using your geekery for benevolent purposes.&lt;/p&gt;
