Ownership of Data - digg this
Aurora (Part 4) from Adaptive Path on Vimeo.
This is an interesting video about a new browser that looks waaaay too complicated for anyone to use. What struck me though (and why I am sharing it) is that the mom in the video talks about the ownership of her seven year old's data. I haven't given any real thought to the data generated by my kids. The mom says that she owns it until they turn eighteen. I'd be interested to know if this is the real law in the US. And while it seems to be talking about personal information rather than say an artwork, would a painting done by my child be mine or theirs?

From my understanding of copyright law.
The parents do retain control, but the kids can apply or sue to regain control in a court of law if their under 18.
It which time, the court would appoint someone as an adviser/mentor to oversee the child and their holdings.
There was a story in Fast Company magazine about a girl who has her own internet company (made stuff for Myspace and websites) and she had to go through a similar process.
under 18yrolds have no real rights under the law. you HAVE to go through the parent/guardian to secure anything from/for them. they only have as much freedom/legal rights as their parent/guardian allows (within limits, hence the existence of CPS). it's a tight rope
